FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a septic system and how does it work?
A septic system is an underground wastewater treatment structure used where there's no centralized sewer. Wastewater flows into a watertight tank where solids settle as sludge and grease floats as scum; anaerobic bacteria break these down. The clarified effluent then flows into a drain field of perforated pipes, where it's filtered through the soil — a natural biological filter that removes harmful bacteria, viruses, and toxins. Regular inspection and maintenance prevent costly failures.
How do I know if my home is on septic or city sewer?
First look for sewer manholes in the street — round access lids in the road usually mean city sewer. You can also check whether you get a sewer bill, review your property records and permits, look for a tank or manhole cover in your yard (often in the back), or ask previous owners. If you're still unsure, we can locate and identify your system definitively.
What are the different types of septic systems?
The main types are: Conventional (tank + drain field, the most common); Chamber (connected chambers, the most frequently prescribed drain field in metro Atlanta); Aerobic Treatment Unit / ATU (uses an aerator to digest contaminants faster); Drip Emitter (timed small doses through tubing); and Mound (a sand mound for shallow soils, high groundwater, or bedrock). We help you choose the right one for your site and county requirements.
How often should I pump my septic tank?
Most homeowners should pump every 3–5 years to prevent backups and extend the system's life. Household size, water usage, and whether you have a garbage disposal all affect the timeline. Properties with high water tables or near creeks and rivers may need more frequent service.
